M Cafe de Chaya: a new old favorite from LA
Revelatory use of ingredients
(Left) Big macro, 1470 yen (right) Tofu & oatmeal strawberry cupcake, 336 yen.
Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will enjoy dining at M Cafe de Chaya, which opened in September. Its LA-inspired contemporary macrobiotic cuisine uses no meat, eggs, dairy products, white sugar or chemical additives, instead bringing out the authentic flavors of organic brown rice and vegetables, beans and seaweed. The original Japanese macrobiotic method tended to produce stodgy cuisine, but this naturally evolved as it traveled overseas. Now it has returned to Japanese shores. The Big Macro, a healthy, filling brown rice patty, is immensely popular in LA. The store stocks many unassuming yet delicious deli and dessert items created from amazing ingredients. An overwhelming natural food experience awaits you in this sunlit open cafe.
